The 1st Hungerford Scout Group was started in September 1967, with a small Cub Pack meeting in the Croft Hall (known as the Church House then). In 1970, the Scout Troop was started, when the first Cubs had become old enough to “go up”, as it was in those days.
In 1972 the Group moved to new premises, in its own dedicated building in Everlands Road. This building was close to the station, opposite where Tesco’s is now. During the our time there the Venture Unit was started in 1975. Once again, it was the first Cubs, having passed through Scouts that now formed the new Unit.
The Group occupied the Everlands Road hall until 1986, when the momentous decision was taken to find a site and build our own headquarters. The trustees of the Croft Hall very kindly offered the Group the lease on the overgrown garden at the back of the hall. Despite the daunting task of raising over forty thousand pounds the Group “got on with it”. Thanks to their efforts and kind help from local organisations, and a couple of hostelries, the goal was achieved. This was opened on 1st April, appropriately, in 1987. The honours were done by the then Chief Scout, Major-General Michael Walsh and the Group has occupied the site ever since.

During our tenure of the current site, we took yet another momentous decision, and that was to become a co-educational Group. Girls had always been welcome in the Venture Unit, but this opened the door to girls in all sections, from Beavers through Cubs and Scouts. Now it may not sound momentous today, but back then the idea of girls in scouting was breaking a ninety-year “boys only” tradition. From the viewpoint of history, it was one of the best decisions we have ever taken, and has proved a total success.

We have also seen the birth of Beavers, a completely new section to Scouting. Started in the early nineties, the colony has been very successful, all be it with a short hick-up in 2005.
The Group is looking to move ever forward, and 2005 has seen the launch of our own Archery Club. Meeting regularly on Sunday mornings, this extra activity gives the youngsters yet another opportunity.
The Group is conscious of its role in the Town, and we support the Constable and Town & Manor, every year, by escorting them to church for their thanks giving service. We attend our Remembrance Day service, where the youngsters lay a wreath on behalf of the entire Group.
Members of the Group take part in many of the Towns activities, including the local Theatre Group, the Town Band, and many, many more.
